Anti-Bullying Week
With the recent rise in the use of digital technologies and social media platforms; there has been an extreme increase in the levels of cyberbullying.
Younger children are having access to new digital platforms.
Without the proper awareness of the positive and negative aspects of these digital platforms, the outcomes can be drastic.
For parents, it is essential to stay updated with emerging social networking mobile applications and websites.
Here are some tips for parents to stop cyberbullying.
- Communication is the key.
Build a healthy relationship with your child/ren.
Let them feel that they can trust you and talk to you about any problems they face.
- Teach your child/ren about the harms of bullying and cyberbullying in specific.
Sometimes, children don’t understand how harmful their actions could be. Teach your child/ren to accept and respect the differences of all. - Monitor your child’s behaviour and online usage.
If your child is being bullied, don’t panic. Teach them not to respond to any messages or posts from cyberbullies. Explain that this is not their fault and try to figure out a solution for this. - Talk to your school’s guidance counsellors.
If your child experienced any form of bullying, it is important to raise the issue with the school management or superiors. - Lastly, don’t threaten to take the phone or computer away.
This threat will only encourage your children to be more secretive.
On the other hand, encourage your child/ren to participate in different activities that will boost their self-confidence.
As a school, BSEE has managed to successfully create a safe environment for all our students. It is not about setting strict rules for the students but about embedding the values of respect, acceptance and tolerance.
